If there is one thing I do not believe in, it is a coincidence. Nothing in the universe happens randomly. A star does not randomly begin the supernova process before the process is complete. A leaf does not randomly fall from a tree, it does not randomly rain, and the sun does not randomly appear or disappear in the sky. You don’t randomly meet people for no reason.
Everything in the universe is part of an intricate system, a well-balanced machine that operates more efficiently than anything humans can create. Whether you attribute this to God or another belief, the fact remains that everything happens for a reason. Sometimes, things happen to us so that we learn new information and discover new characteristics about ourselves, such as courage or determination, and sometimes, we meet people who are meant to teach us a lesson.
Several years ago, I was employed at a group home for foster youth. I applied to the position because matters involving juveniles had always interested me and were one of my primary research areas when working toward my bachelor’s degrees. I wanted to make a difference in the lives of children who had been abused, neglected, and let down by the adults who were supposed to look out for them. Although this job granted me the opportunity to teach these young boys life lessons and to help them overcome what they had endured, I believe that they were placed into my life so that I may learn from them and understand that a person’s circumstances early in life or what they have experienced does not define them. As a person who was abused in my youth, I defied the odds and the statistics, but so did the young men I worked with, and their kind heartiness taught me to have faith in humanity, especially the young who too many in society want to write off as problems, failures, and burdens. These young men restored my hope in others, and I reflect on a lesson learned from this experience as I see the division and anger tearing my country apart.
This lesson and these boys did not come into my life at random.
